![]() You should see an icon similar to a computer monitor with a black screen. In the search bar at the top of the window, type in ‘Terminal’. There are literally hundreds of free and paid programs available in here. In here, you can search for new software or anything else that is already installed on your new machine. Once you have done this, exit that window and go into the Ubuntu symbol icon found at the top of the left toolbar. In this same Configuration window, you can also set background images and anything else you need to do to make your installation more comfortable for you. ![]() You will be asked possibly many times for your password that you made when you installed the Ubuntu program. Then make sure that your software is completely up to date by checking for Updates, also found in the configuration settings. The hard wire hook up should probably just work. WiFi is pretty much set up the way you would with any other device. Make sure you go into the Configuration settings (a cog wheel on the bottom left toolbar on your desktop) and look for a connections icon to ensure that either your hard-wire Ethernet connection is working or your Wi-Fi adapter is connecting before doing anything else. Get familiar with your desktop by poking around at different things to see what they do. When it finishes, it will reboot and bring you to a logon screen or the desktop directly. ![]() Most of the other steps presented to you should be left as they are unless you know you have something specific you want to change (like target drive or size of partitions needed) and are confident that you know what you are doing. If you have installed another OS in the past, most of this will seem familiar. Most of anything else is self-explanatory. When asked, be sure to check to allow ‘Third-Party’ Downloads to install and let Ubuntu download updates while installing when this is presented to you. Choose to install it as long as you are sure you are okay with the install formatting and wiping the drive in your target machine. In this case, it will ask you if you want to just try the program or install it. To do that, insert the DVD or CD into your target device's drive and boot from that disc drive. If you are uncertain as to which version you need, then download the x86 version.ĭownload and burn the ISO to a DVD and install it on your target hardware.
